The fifty-one acres of dense forest that separate the urban neighborhoods of Montlake and Capitol Hill comprise Interlaken Park, named for a summer resort in Switzerland. Here you’ll find towering trees, an enchanting collection of dirt trails and a tree-canopied, wide, paved road that’s closed to motorized traffic and served as the principal bicycle and buggy path in the 1890s. Bicyclists still enjoy this quiet path as part of their city commutes today.

At Interlaken Icicle Dash the race begins with a smooth out-and-back on the historic road, then turns quickly upward and onto the forest trails. There are a few steep pitches that will tax your quads, and a sustained climb before you turn around to sail back down through the trees. Those who fancy themselves strong downhill runners may catch the climbers on the descent! Then catch your breath on the silky smooth pavement, because each lap is 2.5k and 5k runners run it twice, while 10k runners run it four times. The climb will leave you puffing, the descent will be thrilling, and when it’s all over, you’ll have one serious endorphin high. Come discover the refreshing power of this green enclave!

Are you competitive?

Your best 4 performances in the Winter Trail Series will rank you in the series standings!
If you want to do fewer events, that’s okay! Series events are open to everyone.
You may register for events individually, or use Series Registration to sign up for more than one event at once for your own convenience. Using Series Registration is not required to be part of the series competition.
If you complete any of the 2014-15 season Winter Trail Series events, you are automatically entered.
Points will be awarded based on finish placement, and this will be done separately for both women’s and men’s finishers.
The 1st place woman and 1st place man in each event score 100 points, 2nd place scores 95, 3rd scores 92, 4th scores 90, 5th 89 and so on. Places 64th and lower score 30 points.
The series rewards those with the most points, regardless of what distances they ran.
In the event of a tie, each runner’s highest point score is used for the tie-breaker. If two runners have identical highest point scores, then the next highest point scores are compared until the tie is broken.
The top series participants receive special recognition at the final Winter Trail Series event, Frost Eagle, on February 7th, 2015.

Young Runner Discount

Runners in middle school or high school who run track or cross-country are eligible to receive a $10 discount on online pre-registration prices on any and all of the Winter Trail Series events. If you are a young runner, or coach young runners, contact Rebecca at rebecca@mergeo.com to get your coupon code!

Coaches may also use the code if one of their athletes is participating in the same event.

Young runners registering at the event may receive $5 off day-of-event registration.

In the spirit of Interlaken Icicle Dash, the top 3 men and top 3 women in each distance will win one of these ice sphere molds! Not only does a large ice ball look cool in your glass, but it also melts slower than traditionally smaller ice cubes. Neat!

Course Description

The course starts with an out-and-back tour of the fairly flat, paved Interlaken Boulevard, where it is closed to car traffic through this forest park. The course then turns up a short staircase and onto dirt trails, including a climb to the top of the park and back down to Interlaken Boulevard for the short return to the start/finish. Each loop is 2.5 km. The 5k is two loops, and the 10k is four loops.

Aid Station
The aid station is located at the start/finish. 5k runners will pass the station halfway through their race (2.5k) as they begin their second loop. 10k runners will pass the aid station at 2.5k, 5k, and 7.5k.

The aid station offers water, electrolyte drink, and some carbohydrate-rich or salty foods, such as cookies, pieces of energy bar, gels, chews, chips, bagel, fruity candy, fig bars, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and bananas.

Directions & Parking

Interlaken Park divides the Montlake and Capitol Hill neighborhoods of Seattle. The event will begin near the intersection of 21st Ave E and E Interlaken Blvd. Street parking is available adjacent to check-in and the start/finish point.

The Winter Trail Series

The Winter Trail Series celebrates Seattle and the Eastside’s local parks with trail runs that will keep your winter fitness warm. All events have a choice of two distances, and course lengths range from 4-km to half marathon (13.1 miles). So rally your running pals and put these motivating events on your calendar!

Safety & Etiquette

The trails will be open to other users during the event, including pedestrians with pets, and cyclists. Participants are responsible for their own safety while participating, and the organizers are neither qualified nor equipped to render medical care in the event of a serious injury. In case of an emergency, call 9-1-1. You are encouraged to bring a cell phone with you as a safety precaution, if you wish.

Where the trails are narrow, please let other participants pass you if they want to get by. It is a passing runner’s job to tell the person in front that they wish to pass.
