Course Description

The Cedar Mountain course routes include great variety: The course for both distances starts out following quiet, suburban sidewalk flanked by forest and wetland before entering a mix of single-track and wider forested trails.

The 5-mile route takes runners on a rolling journey north across a powerline clearing to a loop of gently-sloping and plush single-track that is like a toboggan ride in the dense forest atop the Cedar River escarpment. 5-mile runners then return to the finish along the same path.

The 10-mile route ventures farther eastward than the 5-mile, crossing through lowland flats, then ascending nearly 400 feet to the 896-foot west summit of Cedar Mountain and dropping back down for another flat lowland cruise. The route then climbs gradually along a nearly half-mile stretch of quiet neighborhood paved road before returning to a serpentine single-track trail that takes runners just shy of the summit of the east peak, this time more gradually than the first big climb. The route then descends at a gradual-to-moderate grade back to the lowlands and returns to the finish via the rolling trails and 0.9 miles of suburban sidewalk.

There are two staffed road crossings along the course, one is at an intersection with stop signs for all traffic, and the other is at an access road for a private school. Staff are there to help you cross safely, however runners should do their part to look out for cars and cross when safe at both locations, as well as heeding staff instructions.

Course statistics:
5-mile: 5.04 miles, 500 feet of climb
“10-mile”: 11.00 miles, 1520 feet of climb

Aid stations:
There is an aid station at the second road crossing, which is visited twice by both courses, as well as an additional aid station for 10-mile runners only.

Aid station distances:
5-mile: 1.45 miles, 3.60 miles
“10-mile”: 1.45 miles, 5.39 miles, 9.55 miles

Safety, Etiquette, & Dogs

SAFETY

The trails will be open to other users during the event, including pedestrians with pets, and cyclists. Participants are responsible for their own safety while participating, and the organizers are neither qualified nor equipped to render medical care in the event of a serious injury. In case of an emergency, call 9-1-1. You are encouraged to bring a cell phone with you as a safety precaution, if you wish.

PASSING ETIQUETTE
Where the trails are narrow, please let other participants pass you if they want to get by. It is a passing runner’s job to tell the person in front that they wish to pass.

HEADPHONES
If you’d like to listen to music while you’re on the course, please use headphones or earbuds, so that runners around you can’t hear it. Others may prefer a quieter event experience or may have different musical tastes. Runners playing music in the open air may be asked to leave the event.

Also, keep the volume low enough that you can hear someone talking to you in a normal voice, for example, another runner saying they would like to pass on your left.
