Tiger Mountain is the crown jewel of the Issaquah Alps, and the Tiger Mountain Trail Run will offer an excellent tour of this vast and magnificent State Forest. This event offers a quintessential Pacific Northwest trail running experience at what may be Seattle-area trail runners’ favorite playground, with fantastic and well-marked loop courses at a variety of distances and ample support.

This event is part of the Half Marathon Trail Series, and runners in the Half Marathon distance will earn points toward their series standing. You can read more below or on the Half Marathon Trail Series page.

Coronavirus Measures

As we started our 2020 Half Marathon Trail Series in February we had no idea that a global pandemic was about to have so much impact on the lives and work of ourselves and virtually everyone in our broader communities at all levels. We’re taking the COVID-19 crisis seriously and are committed to working together to keep ourselves and our communities (including you) healthy as we respond to directives and guidance from government and health officials to flatten the curve of the pandemic.

You’re an important part of our team in this effort. Here are some things we’re asking you to do to Go The Social Distance with us:

Please don’t come to the event if you feel sick, believe you may have been exposed to coronavirus, or are in close contact with one or more vulnerable people (old, immune compromised, having another health condition that exacerbates COVID-19)
Plan ahead so that you don’t need to make any extra stops where you would potentially come into contact with others on your way to and from the event
Don’t carpool with people you’re not already in close contact with. We normally encourage carpooling, but this isn’t the time for it.
Arrive at the event site no more than one hour before your start time
Keep a 6-foot interpersonal distance whenever possible and avoid touching your mouth, nose, and eyes
Cover all coughs and sneezes with a tissue (which should then immediately be discarded) or with your elbow. The coronavirus is spread via droplets from the nose, mouth, and lungs, so keeping your droplets to yourself is one of the most important things you can do.
Behave as if you or other people could be contagious, even if you feel fine. Some COVID-19 cases appear to have been spread from people with mild or imperceptible symptoms; don’t let that be you.
Wash your hands frequently with soap or clean them with hand sanitizer; do this especially after touching your face or any surface that other people may have touched and contaminated (like door handles, table surfaces, etc.)
Don’t touch drink coolers or any other serving containers; ask staff and volunteers to serve you.
Use our self-serve bib number pick-up; check posted lists to find out which number is yours.

Here are some steps our organizing team is taking in response to COVID-19:

We’re limiting the number of people permitted to register for the event
We’ll be using individual starts over a several-hour window of time to avoid gathering large groups of people close together. We’ll be starting an average of one runner per minute, so runners can start alone or with members of their household only. Expect these changes to be reflected in the event schedule over the coming weeks.
We’ve made our credit and refund policies more flexible to significantly reduce your financial risk of registering for our events during this less predictable time
Hand sanitizer will be available around the registration area and the toilets, and this is for you and everyone else to use
Staff and volunteers will use gloves or implements when handling items to limit the potential for contagion
Individual serving portions will be provided of drinks and snacks at aid stations and the finish line
We’ll be posting live results on the event website rather than setting up a results display in the finish area, so you can check your result from your smartphone without having to crowd around a screen

Course Description

The courses start and finish from the trailhead on the east side of Tiger Mountain and use a great variety of trails, covering gently-rolling to steep terrain.

The 5k course makes a single clockwise loop, going out on the forest road and returning on a rolling trail.

The 12k course adds onto the 5k loop by continuing westward along the forest road, following the 50k route until cutting off up the hill for a nearly 900-foot climb that links back to the 50k route for a mostly downhill return to the 5k loop and the finish.

The Half Marathon course starts out going east from the start, then promptly embarks on a long climb on the newly-built Master Link Trail, connecting to forest roads on the upper slopes of East Tiger Mountain and passing below the summit before a long, moderate descent on mountain biking trails. The route then returns to the finish via the trails that wrap around the eastern flank of the mountain, with gentle-to-moderate climbs and descents.

The 50k course starts out going east for a grand clockwise lollipop loop on these popular mountain biking trails, hitting two aid stations along the way, before passing through the start finish for another aid stop. 50k runners then go west for a longer loop that extends into the West Tiger Natural Resources Conservation Area and circumnavigates the three West Tiger summits with a mix of traversing, climbing, and descending, passing aid stations four more times before returning to the finish.

Aid Stations are many and well-stocked. The longest distance between aid stations is a little over 9k (5.6 miles, on the 50k), however in case of warm weather, runners may wish to carry a bottle or hydration bladder, especially on the longer distances. Course closes – 6:30pm

Directions & Parking

The start and finish is at the Department of Natural Resources trailhead parking area, about 0.3 miles along the gravel road from State Route 18. Parking will be at this parking area, and as needed, along the gravel road approaching the trailhead parking and at the parking area adjacent to Highway 18 (pending confirmation.) A Discover Pass is needed to park on DNR lands. Please follow any parking directions offered by event staff.

Safety, Etiquette, Dogs

OTHER USERS
The trails will be open to other users during the event, including pedestrians, bicyclists and equestrians (horseback riders). Please be courteous. This area is more heavily used by mountain bikes than equestrians, and on some of the trails mountain bikes have the right of way. Event staff and signage will alert mountain bikers to your presence, but be prepared to yield when requested. Also, if you should encounter equestrians, be aware that horses have the right of way: Stop running and talk to the rider; you will probably need to step to the side of the trail to let the horse past, but sometimes the rider will tell you it is okay to walk past. The amount of trail traffic will depend upon the weather.

SAFETY
Participants are responsible for their own safety while participating, and the organizers are neither qualified nor equipped to render medical care in the event of a serious injury. In case of an emergency, call 9-1-1. You are encouraged to bring a cell phone with you as a safety precaution, if you wish.

PASSING ETIQUETTE
Where the trails are narrow, please let other participants pass you if they want to get by. It is a passing runner’s job to tell the person in front that they wish to pass.

HEADPHONES
If you’d like to listen to music while you’re on the course, please use headphones or earbuds, so that runners around you can’t hear it. Others may prefer a quieter event experience or may have different musical tastes. Runners playing music in the open air may be asked to leave the event.

Also, keep the volume low enough that you can hear someone talking to you in a normal voice, for example, another runner saying they would like to pass on your left.

DOGS
Our events are USATF sanctioned and subject to USATF policies, and so dogs are not allowed to accompany runners on the course.
