The fifty-one acres of dense forest that separate the urban neighborhoods of Montlake and Capitol Hill comprise Interlaken Park, named for a summer resort in Switzerland. Here you’ll find towering trees, an enchanting collection of dirt trails and a tree-canopied, wide, paved road that’s closed to motorized traffic and served as the principal bicycle and buggy path in the 1890s. Bicyclists still enjoy this quiet path as part of their city commutes today.

At Interlaken Ice Cream Dash the race begins with a smooth out-and-back on the historic road, then turns quickly upward and onto the forest trails. There are a few steep pitches that will tax your quads, and a sustained climb before you turn around to sail back down through the trees. Those who fancy themselves strong downhill runners may catch the climbers on the descent! Then catch your breath on the silky smooth pavement, because each lap is 2.5k and 5k runners run it twice, while 10k runners run it four times. The climb will leave you puffing, the descent will be thrilling, and when it’s all over, you’ll have one serious endorphin high. Come discover the refreshing power of this green enclave!

Course Description

The course starts with an out-and-back tour of the fairly flat, paved Interlaken Boulevard, where it is closed to car traffic through this forest park. The course then turns up a short staircase and onto dirt trails, including a climb to the top of the park and back down to Interlaken Boulevard for the short return to the start/finish. Each loop is 2.5 km. The 5k is two loops, and the 10k is four loops.

Aid Station
The aid station is located at the start/finish. 5k runners will pass the station halfway through their race (2.5k) as they begin their second loop. 10k runners will pass the aid station at 2.5k, 5k, and 7.5k.

The aid station offers water, electrolyte drink, and some carbohydrate-rich or salty foods, such as cookies, pieces of energy bar, gels, chews, chips, bagel, fruity candy, fig bars, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and bananas.

Interlaken Park divides the Montlake and Capitol Hill neighborhoods of Seattle. The event will begin near the intersection of 21st Ave E and E Interlaken Blvd. Street parking is available adjacent to check-in and the start/finish point.

The NWTR design for Fall 2018 – Summer 2019 features our “Run Every Trail” slogan on signs to help guide you! You can order apparel when 1) registering and pick them up at the event, 2) order at RunningBug Apparel and have them shipped, or, 3) try it on and buy at the event.

Make sure to stick around after your race for hot dogs, veggie dogs, watermelon, and other yummy snacks! We will do awards for the top 3 male and female in each distance and a raffle for fun prizes (included in entry fee).

Safety, Etiquette, Dogs

SAFETY
The trails will be open to other users during the event, including pedestrians with pets, and cyclists. Participants are responsible for their own safety while participating, and the organizers are neither qualified nor equipped to render medical care in the event of a serious injury. In case of an emergency, call 9-1-1. You are encouraged to bring a cell phone with you as a safety precaution, if you wish.

PASSING ETIQUETTE
Where the trails are narrow, please let other participants pass you if they want to get by. It is a passing runner’s job to tell the person in front that they wish to pass.

HEADPHONES
If you’d like to listen to music while you’re on the course, please use headphones or earbuds, so that runners around you can’t hear it. Others may prefer a quieter event experience or may have different musical tastes. Runners playing music in the open air may be asked to leave the event.

Also, keep the volume low enough that you can hear someone talking to you in a normal voice, for example, another runner saying they would like to pass on your left.
